AN ENGLISH VISITOR

COLONEL ORAIE- INTERVIEWED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WAN G A Nil. October 1. Colonel Orrae, of a hardware manufacturing firm at Wolverhampton, is at present on a visit to Wanganui. Jn the course of an interview, he attributed America’s prosperity to the close co-opcration between employer and employee. The trend of labour in the Old Country at present was to restrict the output, and keep a market for their labour. He maintained that this was a foolish aspect, and he hoped that tho day was not far distant when the whole outlook would change. •'Until it does.” added Colonel Urine, "I am afraid we cannot show much reduction on the manufactured article.” Asked regarding the closing of the Welsh coal mines, of which information was cabled a few days ago. Colonel Orme remarked that there seemed to have been a considerable amount of labour trouble in South Wales, and he would not be surprised to see some mines closed down for good. One had to remember that oil ivas now being very extensively used on ships, etc., and that- coal mining in the Did Country was not the profitable industry it used to” he. Touching on the matter of cabled informa f ion between the Old Country and New Zealand, Colonel Orme said that' when lie left Home, there were some very strange rumours afloat regarding the financial position of the dominion, and he was agreeably surprised when he arrived here 'to find that in spite of the slump, trade was so satisfactory. lie was perfectly convinced that a system of reliable cable'information between New Zealand and Home was sadly lacking., in fact some of it, he added, was utter piffle. lie was personally acquainted with several members of Parliament in the Old Country, and when he returned he intended to impress this upon them. In regard to the quality of New Zealand butler, he endorsed all that Lord Northcliffe had said, and he considered that it was delicious. He regretted that such a splendid article was not better advertised at Home.
