At a meeting of the Auckland Council of Christian Congregations last evening, the Rev. D. D. Scott (Onehunga) introduced the subject of totulisa.tor permits. He said fia was convinced that, racing pushed more men outside the Church than did anything ■ else. More instruction was needed in the ethics of gambling. The council’s aim should be to reduce the existing number of permits at least, and to abolish gambling as an institution. They should be s upPpUed by the Government. He moved “That the council views with the strongest disapproval, the suggested increase of totalisator permits, and remits the question to the Public Questions Committee.” A long discussion ensued, some members deprecating the hasty action as being detrimental to the best interests of the issue, in that they would be assisting the racing fraternity, who were striving to abolish the commission’s report, which, at least, suggested the removal of abuses. An amendment to refer the subject to the Public Questions Committee to report to the executive was lost, and the motion carried. OAfvIARU TROTTING CLUB. The Oamaru Trotting Club has carried cut a large number of improvements since its meeting last year. The totalisator house ha 3 been extended to provide 20 additional selling windows and 20 payment windows. The lawn has been reterraced, and the present stands connected, by additional seating stands, thus ensuring a splendid view for everybody. Tho present stewards’ building has " been converted into up-to-date ladies and gentlemen’s cloak rooms. A new stewards’ building, with birdcage, has been constructed. This building has a stand on top for the press and the committee, with further accommodation below for the press. A weighing room, jockeys’ room, and new judge’s box, with separate compartments for the judge and the timekeepers, have also been provided. Sanitary drainage has been installed, and the town water supply laid on. The sum spent in improvements totals £IBOO. This year the club has increased its stake money by £3OO. The track at the present time is in fiist-class order. GAMING COMMISSIONERS’ REPORT. WELLINGTON, October 1. At tho annual meeting of the Wellington Racing Club the president (Mr J. B. liarcourt) said the receipts for the year were £110,449. compared with £85,041 "last year, and the club had a cash balance of £58,845. In stakes £30,727 was paid—an increase of £10,529. Government taxation was £35.347, which. was only £6380 under the amount paid in stakes. The totalisator receipts were £31,022, against £57,411. ('even years ago the club’s income was only £46,289. Tho year ahead would require greai- care, as the club was committed to very big stakes, and must expect a fulling off in revenue. Extensive alterations had been made on the course and a start made on a permanent scheme of improvement of the stands, which had hitherto been deferred till the club’s debt was paid off. The chairman said the club strongly supported the Gaming Commissioner’s report. Mr Harcourt was re-elected president, and , Messrs W. Moot-house and Skerrett, K. 0., ice-presidents. I- allowing were Mr Harcourt’s remarks on the Racing Commission:—’’l make them with some diffidence,” he said, “as the commissioners have seen fit to recommend this club one more day’s racing, thus bringingffit into line with the Canterbury Jockey Hub. Your stewards have viewed with some concern tho reception in certain places inat has been accorded to this report, and t.iey nope that by the time it comes up for the consideration of Parliament the natural disappointment felt by those clubs recommended for elimination or curtailment will have to be dissipated, The adoption of the report is immeasurably in the true interests of sport, a fact which is realised by 90 per cent, of fhe racing people of the dominion Speaking -for the executive of this. club. I cannot be too emphatic in stating - that. they are strongly in favour of its adoption. as It stands, believing, as fcney. do, that it is as near perfection as possible. With others we regret that it has been found necessary for the general welfare, to abolish certain clubs, many of fheii.i o’d-estabhshed; but this result ' was inevitable and it ought- to be accented in a I rue sporting spirit, and all local interests submerged in the interests of the general "C'lere, Regardless of all that has been sud to the contrary, it must be recognised as an economic absurdity that more than one racecourse.track and ore trotting track mould be maintained in any one centre. Opponents in Parliament are bound to make Ibis an occasion for a frontal attack on racing in general and the big clubs in particular, the hitler probably on account of the big totalisator turnover. The Large attendance, which is. of course, responsible '?, r li,: * turnover, appears to be overlooked. i 1m leading clubs are the foundation stone 'teon which the whole structure is raised the. rich, classic races provided bv them mai-img it possible for breeders to import NAPIER, October 2 Sir George Clifford, president of the Racing Conference, in a letter to the president o! the Napier Park Club, iniimates that it is _ his intention to submit to j fie Prime Minister. bis -opinion regarding the- Pricing Commission's report, with which Sir George Clifford is v. holly, in accord in the main tea. turps, and considers any minor points on whb’h hesitation is possible too trivial to be allowed to sacrifice the report's substantial i.dva ntages. Ike president of the Napier Park Club has replied regretting that oh account of the injustice to Napier Park, and on account of several other matters, he cannot agree wilh Sir George Clifford’s opinion as to the commission’s report. The recommendation to abolish Napier Park, while continuing to grant permits to small districts practically surrounded bv courses, lias aroused indignation in the whole of this district.

OTAUTAU RACING CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. That raring, and more particularly the Otautau Racing Club, has not suffered to any appreciable extent as the result of the present financial stringency was evidenced on Wednesday evening, when 150 members from all parts of Southland were present in iho Reading Room of the Otautau Town Hall for the purpose of holding the annual meeting. Mr O’Brien (president) presided, and in his opening remarks, expressed pleasure on behalf of tho club at the large attendance, stating it went to show that the sport of racing was very much alive in the Otautau district. Commenting on the report- presented he thought tho club should feel honoured that it had drawn its members from all parts of Southland. Since last year a considerable amount of work had been done on the racecourse, but they had only been able to hold a one-day meeting, which did not bring in a great deal of revenue. The membership, however, had kept up well, and this had enabled them to carry on. Owing to (he cost of building material they had. to centralise on improvements. The Racing Commission on their visit had commented very favourably on the appointments and the racing track. The amount of work on the course in the future would depend on the revenue. Finr-e its inception two years ago the club had spent £3437, and tho membership stood at 336. Hie president of the Racing Commission had congratulated the club on its excellent financial position, and it was very gratifying to get this approbation from such an important body. lie referred to the death of four of the original subscribers, Messrs David Morton and D. R. Jones, of Invercargill, Donald M‘Daren, Eastern Bush, and M i'liam Bradley, Mangapiri. and said that letters of condolence had been sent to the various families. In vacating the chair he thanked members for the cordial support accorded him during his term as president for the last two years, and also tho committee for the assistance he had received. He wished specially to thank Messrs J. Miller, G. Saxelby, and A. M'Auley for the invaluable work done by them, and paid a high tribute to the secretary. Mr E. Matheson. whose work in connection with the Racing Commission was worthy of commendation. Ihe report and balance sheet were adopted. Speaking to the report. Air \V. E. Taylor, of Invercargill, congratulated the club on its excellent position, stating that- the president and executive were entit'ed to the highest encomiums of the province for the manner in which the affairs Had. been conducted. Tic congratulated the chairman on the furtherance of the ideals of racing, that gentleman having probably done more for the sport than any other man in Southland. The men who had borne the heat and burden of the day were entitled to all tho .praise that could be lavished on them, and their president had battled strongly for the chib out of his own goodwill. He congratulated members on its prosperity. Election of Office-bearers.—Two nominaions were received for the office of president, Messrs M. O’Brien and Dr A. A. ■Stewart, the former being returned by a largo, majority. On taking the chair. Air O Brien said he would pursue the same policy as he had in the past, and would do his utmost to preserve the interests of the Otautau Racing Club. Air \V. Matthews was returned unopposed for the office of vice-president. The resignation of Mr W. Forde as a member of committee necessitated seven members being returned in place of six, the following being elected Messrs Colin Airoheson, -T. T. Brookev, A Bultuan, A. ABAuley, F. Malcolm, A. G. Mills, and G. Sinclair; auditor, Air H. T.' Thomson (re-elected). The Soldiers’ Memorial.—Air Holmes brought up the matter of the SloVliers’ Memorial, and asked for the co-operation of members in raising the £290 required to complete it. It was pointed out that this was a matter for the committee to deal with,, the president assuring the meeting that it would receive their f:il-1- consideration. A hearty vote of thanks to the scrutineers, Messrs Taylor, Wilson, aml Mooney, terminated a most enthusiastic
