HIGH-PRICED MATTRESSES.
ACTION BY BOARD OF TRADE. AUCKLAND, September 27. Before Mr J. AV. Poynton, S.M., to-day, Tonson, Garlick (Ltd.) weie charged, on the information of the Board of Trade, with having sold to F. J. Williams, of Waipiro Bay (near Gisborne), 32 mattress eases at £B2 10s, which price was unreasonably high. The defence was that the mattresses, being required lor shearers, the beds were made of extremely strong quality; that when a, protest was made by Williams he was given a reduction of 10 per cent, as on a wholesale order; that after the action hud been instituted it was discovered that a. gross clerical error had been made by a young lady in the factory. Williams, examined by Air J. M’Veagb, said that, he was not aware that (he defendant company had sent a cheque for £2B 14s 6d to him cave of the Board of Trade. Further hearing was adjourned till October 14.
