QUEST EXPEDITION

LONDON, September 25. Just prior to the sailing of the Quest M'Leod, who was a member of the last Shackelton Expedition, visited the ship and signed on as a member of the expedition. Sir Eniest Shackelton, in a special article in The Times, explains the economic importance to the dominions in the Southern Hemisphere of the two broad lines of research to which the expedition will devote its energies—namely, magnetism and meteorology. The correction of the errors in the magnetic compass and the charts based thereon is highly important. In these days of fast steamers the total saving in time and money would be enormous through more accurate charts. Accurate meteorology in the Southern Hemisphere depends on a knowledge of Antarctic w T eather. The furnishing of fresh knowledge thus acquired (with the assistance of wireless) to the stock-raising dominions will enable farmers and breeders to know the weather ahead. Sir Ernest Shackelton also hopes to lay down lines for the development of air services.
