RETURNED SOLDIERS’ CLUB
CITY COUNCIL ENTERTAINED. A very pleasant evening was spent on the 26th at tho Returned Soldiers’ Club, Moray place, when the Dunedin tt.S.A. entertained the members of the City Council and ex-councillors to the total number of about 20. The visitors had a good look round, and then proceeded to take their part in a billiard tournament, including billiards proper, snooker, and Chinaman. A time limit was imposed on each game, and tho issue was decided on points, the result proving in favour of the visitors, a circumstance that caused the Rev. Hector Maclean later in the evening to recall Thackeray’s severe reflection on proficiency in the game and its indication of a misspent and unintelligent youth. An adjournment was made to the canteen, where supper was served. Ihe Rev. Mr Maclean presided during the absence of Ur Harrison (president of the association), who was unavoidably detained elsewhere till a late hour. The toast of “itie Councillors and Ex-C'y.'.rx’illors” (drank mostly in coffee) was proposed by the chairman and responded to by the Mayor, ('is Begs and Clark. Dr Harrison (president), who was unable to be present at the earlier part of the proceedings, also returned thanks for the visit, and an excellent musical programme was enjoyed.
