THE ARBUCKLE CASE
CHARGE OF MURDER. SAN FRANCISCO, September 23. As Arbuckle was being taken into the Police Court at San Francisco for the preliminary hearing of the charge of murder he said to the reporters: “ I was not drank at the party in my rooms. I did not harm Aiiss Rappe, and I am able to prove it.”
Judge Lazarus ordered that the seats in the court room should be reserved for women only.
Two physicians (prs Shelby and 0-ppuls), who examined Aiiss Itappe’s body after her death, declared that external force had caused her death. Her arms were bruised.
One witness (Semmach) who was present at the party, said that Arbuckle, in a prank, applied ice to Aiiss Rappe’s body without any intention of causing her injury.
Rowall Sherman, who was also present at the -party, made a deposition in New York denying that he heard Aiiss Rappe charge Arbuckle with naving injured her,
September 24. The defence suffered a serious set-back owing to the fact that the prosecution obtained a statement from Seminach regarding what Arbuckle said concerning ,vlis3 Rappe after the incident, which was of such a serious nature that it was made privately to the judge. Ihe prosecution also- exhibited Miss Rappe’s shredded clothing, making a visible effect on the spectators.
