AUSTRALIA’S TWO CURSES
LONDON, September 13. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s book, “ Wanlerings of a Spiritualist,” published tolay, deals chiefly with his visit to Ausralia. He states that Australians in some pays are “ more English than the Engish. They have kept to the old type, chile we have been imperceptibly Ameri:anised. The Australians are less ready o show emotion, are more restrained in heir applause, more levoted to personal iberty, keener in sport, and quieter in xpression.” Sir Conan Doyle declares that drink and orse racing are Australia’s two curses, le was shocked and astonished bv the lumber of young men of decent exterior o be seen staggering down the street, I ton quite early in the dav. He adds: ' Horse racing is the real drag on the ountry’s progress. Everyone is bent pon winning easy money, and this makes hem dissatisfied with the money earned.”
