OTAGO ART SOCIETY.

The annual report, of the council of the Otago Art Sociey congratulates members on the continued progress of the society. Previous to the November exhibition, a small sub-committee succeeded in adding over 69 names to the honorary members’ roll, thus increasing the membership in two seasons by over 100. The quality of work shown at the annual exhibition was of a much higher standard than usual. Ihe sale of pictures, including those disposed of by art union amounted to £374 8s 6cl. Tile sum of £59 3s 6c! was received for admission, and £24 9s from the sale of catalogues. The following prizes were awarded:— “Stiff Life,” in oil or water colour, Alice Poison, School of An. Christchurch; “Landscape” study from Nature in oil, C. Thornton, School of Art, Christchurch; "Study of Head from Life’’ in charcoal, Alice Poison. School of Art, Christchurch. The picture “Waiting,” exhibited by J. R. Jackson, Sydney, was purchased by the society for £3l 10;, and is now hung in the Public Gallery*. The sketch exhibition held in May was visited by large numbers and great interest shown iu the work. Sketches to the value of £37 10s were disposed of. The balance sheet shows a credit balance of £9l 6s lid.
