SOLDIER STUDENTS
DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL. A special meeting of the University Council was 1 clil on Tuesday afternoon partly for the purpose of considering a proposal to make special concessions in the matter of fees to such students as are returned soldiers- The meeting was attended by Mr T. K. Sidey. M.P. (vice-chancellor, in the chair), Drs H. I.indo Ferguson, Fitzgerald, and \V. Marshall Macdonald, Messrs L. I). Ritchie. (!. Ritchie, ,1. 11. Walker, J. C. Stephens, W. .1. Morrell, J. C. Thomson, W Eudev, and .1. W. Scurr, and Professor H. •w itson. The deputation was under the auspices of tho Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Assoeia tion, and consisted of the president of that body (Dr T. Harrison), the secretary (Mr C. Laing), and two students, Messrs Smaill
and J. 0. Stewart, each of whom made a strong plea for more consideration for returned soldiers and protested against the increase in fees recently made. In informal discussion it was stated that some 50 or 60 students were affected. It was medical students who were chiefly affected. There were about 50 of them, and the increase in the fees for their whole course was £44. lire increase in an arts course was about £5. In the other facul ties the majority of soldier students were receiving educational bursaries amounting to £2O. It was ultimately decided that the matter be considered by the Finance and Special Committee on fees conjointly, a report to be presented at next meeting of the council.
