OBITUARY.
MARQLIS OF MILFORD HAVEN, i LONDON, September 11. The death is announced of the Marquis of Milford Haven (formerly Prince Louis of Battenburg). No one was present when the Marquis of Alilford Haven suddenly expired. IBs housekeeper, after attending liim, returned and found him dead. Ilis wife and younger daughter were staying at a London hotel, preparatory to journeying to Paris, and were summoned, but arrived too lute. Both
his sons were absent serving aboard warships. [The Marquis of Alilford Haven was recently- appointed admiral of the fleet on the retired list in recognition of his services before and after tire outbreak of war. He was born at Grata (Austria) on May 24, 1854, and wars the eldest son of Prince Alexander of Hesse and grandson of Louis 11, (fraud Duke of Hesse, lie was married in 1884 to his cousin. Princess Victoria, daughter of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, and of Princess Alice, Queen Victoria’s daughter. He was a naturalised British subject- as Prince Louis of B.utenburg, and. entered the Royal Navy as naval cadet, 1868; sub-lieutenant, 1874; lieutenant, 1876; commander, 1885; captain, 1891; commodore, 1902. He served in the Egyptian war, 1882 (medal and Khedive's star); Director of Naval Intelligence, 1202-5; rear-ad-miral, 1904: commanding second cruiser squadron, 1905-7; second in command Mediterranean, 1907-8; (,'onimander-in-l’hief Atlantic fleet, 1908-10: commanding third and fourth divisions home fleet, 1911; Second Sea Lord of Admiralty-, 1911-12; First Sea Lord of Admiralty, 1912-14. when be resigned. In 1917 he relinquished, at the King's request, hi-s German titles, assumed by- Royal License Ihe surname of Alountbatten, and was created a peer.]
