DIGGER

ITe Avondale Jockey Club’s Spring meeting opens on the 24th inst. Tho good stakes offered by the club have attracted a record number of visiting horses, which ensures the success of the gathering. Tho Avondale Cup field promises to be the best that has yet lined up in the event. Sasanof has arrived on the scene, and is the ruling fancy, but if rain does not fall in the meantime the track will be rather hard for the Martian gelding. A few keen judges who saw Admiral Codrington win at Marion are quite prepared to see him lead the field home. The local division is not very strong. Glen Canny, Khublai Khan, and Pino Arch are well forward, and may run well. Miss Muriel and Sylvan are a pair among the lightweights that have more than an outside chance. A good field of sprinters is, engaged in the . Flying Handicap. If Mermin and Rational go to the post the pair will carry moste-support. Golden Bubble (another son of Absurd) is now in good form, and being a good beginner will be hard to head off. Tho two-year-old classic event, the Avondale Stakes, has attracted a good field but at present Epitaph, the full sister to Humbug, has monopolised attention, and the race is generally considered a foregone conconclusion. J. Thorpe’s Nocturne is smart, and with ordinary luck at the barrier the daughter of Kilboy will keep Epitaph from pulling over the business end. The Guineas field will probably be reduced to a trio—Mermin, Rational, and Grotesque. Chief interest will be centred in the meeting between Mermin and Rational. Tho racing Rational has done may give him an advantage over his rival in the run home. Last year Mr \Y. G. Stead won the Avondale Stakes with Mermin. This year the Hawke’s Bay sportsman has two engaged in the event—Steen (Ferumooz — Steinheil) and Sir Otway (Nassau —Pedometer). The pair were given a run over three furlongs on Thursday last, but did not show to advantage. Sir Huon ought to be a good proposition in a nine furlong hack race at Avondale. So far 1 hurn ham’s stock have failed to earn a winning bracket. Young Thurnham should not be long in crediting his s re with a win. Rathlin and Paomii have been shaping well over the small sticks, and will have a good following in the hurdle events. Guerre a Mori, is back to his best form; tbe General Lalour gelding is useful over hurdles. Epitaph dashed over three furlongs at Ellenslie on Tuesday morning in 36 2-ssec, beating Grotesque very easily. Evidently the full sister to Humbug possesses the family pace. No Bother ran an attractive seven furlongs on Tuesday last, easily defeating Khublai Khan. The son of Baronet has been a disappointment in the past, but may do better this season.

G. Jones brought up a strong team to carry Mr W. G. Stead’s colours at the Avondale meeting, comprising Sasanoff, Mermin, Absurdiim. Radiant Light, Truthful, Stem, and Sir Otway. The lot are well forward, and should give a good account of themselves.

Humbug ran a good race at Marion, and was being picked out as likely to run well in the Flying Handicap at Avondale, but after working oil Monday morning he developed kidney trouble and the services of Dr Ring had to be requisitioned. Apparently the ailment was not serious, as the son of Absurd was on the track the following morning doing light work. There were <t few smart gallops at Eilerslm on thursday morning. Mermin went half a mile by himself, covering the distance in 47 35sec. The brilliant son of Absurd was lightly shod but he did it well. Rational cleared out from Clueome over five furlongs in 1.2 2-5 sec. It looked as if the Taranaki three-year-old could have ciono better. Lady Lois and Pillage ran three furlongs in 37eee, finishing together. The latter is by Solfc-rmo —Rade, and owned by Air A. M Donald Ihe youngster claims an engagement in the Avondale Stakes. Broadwood shaped well for a maiden, getting over four furlongs in 49seo. Sasanoff was given slow work over a couple of rounds on the tan. The veteran looks in capital form. Humbug and Grotesque ran six furlongs in 1.18. The former was going very easy. Prince Alartian and Strategy bear a welltrained appearance. Prince Alartiacn went nicely over seven furlongs, finishing very well. Esthonia is galloping well enough to get among the early winners. Mbs Muriel and General Advance arrived at, Ellerslie on Tuesday last. The paiilook well after their long trip. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. PAKUBA NO A HUNT RACE S. Mr Donovan (trainer) has completed arrangements to return to New Zealand cn Tuesday next with Duo, Athens, Big Chief, Kickoff, and Hula Girl. It appears that Duo always races in bandage:-:, and after running in the Chelmsford Stakes Donovan was informed that tho stewards in future would not allow him to run the. hors© in bandages except in a manner which would require the approval of the stewards. He thereupon deckled to return to New Zealand. September 16. Although Donovan’s horses were scratched for tho Melbourne Cup yesterday, they have not so far been withdrawn from their A.J.C. spring engagements, and the belief is they will not return to New Zealand until after the Rand-wick meeting. It is pointed out that in th© matter of bandages the stewards’ action only ulac-es Donovan on a level with all other trainers. Duo, Big Chief, Kick-off, Hula Girl, and Athens have been scratched for all Jockey Club engagements. , MELBOURNE, September 15.
