A PRISONER ESCAPES.

A prisoner named William Herbert Chapman, who was being transferred from Dunedin to Paparoa, managed to elude the custody of the constable who was escorting him when the train was near Ashburton on Tuesday, and jumped from the train. Chapman, who complained of ill-liealth while in custody at Dunedin, was under a sentence of six months’ imprisonment for tho theft of a bicycle and an overcoat. Ho is described as a man of medium size, 65 years of age, but looking younger than his years. L J p to last night he was still at large.
