VITAL STATISTICS.
WELLINGTON, September 15. A return gazetted com:- ruing- the vital statistics for the- four metropolitan areas during August shows, with the inclusion of the suburban portions, the lowest death rate in the following figures (the death rate is per thousand of the population, and tiro city figures are given first; the figures relating to suburban areas are given in parentheses) :Auckland. 1.03 (0.91); Wellington, 0.93 (0.89); Christchurch, 1.16 (1.02); Dunedin, 1.25 (1.20). The total birth for the metropolitan areas are 760 —an increase of 45 over the July figures. The deaths during August- were 435 —an increase of 14. Of the total deaths, 214 were males and 221 were femuh s.
