PERSONAL ITEMS.
Nurse Porteous. on the staff of the Riverton Hospital, has handed in her resignation, having received an appointment in Dunedin. Nurse Prentice left by the second express on Saturday to take up her work in China under the auspices of the Canton Village Mission. Professor Hewit.son (chairman of tile committee) and several others were present to wish her success. John Miles Verrall, well known throughout the dominion as a pioneer State Bank advocate, died at his residence, “ Swannan- 'a.” at the age o-f 72 years (says a Christchurch Press Association telegram). Deceased was member for Ashley from 1833 to 1893. Mrs William Nelson, daughter of the late Bishop William Williams, and sister of the late Bishop William Leonard Williams, died at Tomoana. Hawke’s Bay, Inst week, atthe age of 75 years. Her father came to New Zealand in 1845, and worked as a missionary to the Maoris at Bay of Islands, where Mrs Nelson was born. During the Maori war she resided near Gisborne, and 37 yeasr ago was married to Mr William Nelson.
