Tuesday, September 6. (Before his Honor Mr Justice Sim.f) PRISONERS FOR SENTENCE. Edward Weavers and Findlay Janies Forbes, two youths, were brought up for sentence on charges of theft,—His Honor said that hot h prisoners had a record. They would be ordered to be detained for reformative treatment for a period of not. more than five years. Thomas William Ellis was brought up for sentence on a charge of forgery. He was also charged with failing to comply with the conditions of his release on probation on three similar charges.—Mr W. E. Moore, for the prisoner, said that prisoner had repaid the money he had obtained wrongly. 1 here was another charge against him to which he had pleaded not guilty.—The Probation Officer said that prisoner had repaid £do 8s 4d with his own money.—His Honor s:r.d that the probation officer recommended that prisoner should be sent to a veforma rive institution for a long term, and he thought that the best thing in prisoner's own interests. Prisoner would be ordered to be detained for reformative purposes for a period of not more than five years. (Before his Honor Mr Justice Sim.) His Honor sat; in Chambers on Friday morning. ORIGINATING SUMMONS. In re tho estate of John Begg, late of Pukeawa, farmer, deceased, and in re the estate of Adam Begg, late of Dunedin, farmer, deceased (Begg and others v. Johnson and another, executors). —Mr J. A. Cook appeared for plaintiff and Mr Allan for defendants.— This was an originating summons in respect to the assessment of compensation tinder a lease dated August, 1913, from Adam Begg, deceased, to the Rev. Adam Begg and to John Begg, deceased. —Mr Cook having out’ined the case, Mr Allan stated that there was no hostility between the parties.—Mr Cook replied that their was no dispute. It was proposed his Honor should make an order that the question of compensation for the lease be allowed to stand over, and that arbitrators be appointed, to settle the valuation for improvements because these were fast disappearing. It was suggested that Jchn Cochrane, agent for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Balclutlia, be appointed on behalf of plaintiffs, and Joseph Allan Anderson, retired farmer, Mornington, on behalf of defendants; these two to appoint a third arbitrator, or umpire.—The two persons named were appointed to value the improvements made by the lessees, and authorised to appoint an umpire if they could not agree; the question of the apportionment of the purchase money between the lessees and lessor to stand over. HAMILTON, 'September 8. At the Supreme Court to-day Robert Stewart, his wife. May Stewart, and Will Couch were charged with being concerned in the theft of 31591 b of butter from the Waitoa Butter Factory, valued at £329. Lionel Goodwin, formerly manager of the factory, pleaded guilty to selling the butter which was said t° have led to the theft by Stewart, who was in the company’s employ, and that Stewart took the butter and disposed of it a,s home-made dairy butter. The jury returned a verdict of receiving the butter against Stewart, and not guilty against May Stewart and Couch. His Honor sentenced Goodwin and Stewart to one year’s imprisonment. Rachel Rosine House was found guilty of stealing ch'ess baskets from the railway station, and was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment. Prisoner is at present undergoing two years’ reformative treatment for forgery. AUCKLAND. September 8. At the Supremo Court John M‘Lean, a miner, of W'uthi, was sentenced to three years’ probation for breaking, entering, and theft, and five charges of theft. The offences were committed when he was under the influence of drink. MASTERTON, September 9. Hannath Noel Blake Marshall, a Union Bank employee at Pahiatua was acquitted at the Supreme Court to-day on a charge of theft, of a cheque for £47 17s 4d.
