CANTERBURY CRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET.

(Lyttelton Times, August 19.) Business in the grain and produce market continues to be slack, and there are not many lines which show much activity. Garton outs show a tendency to weaken, and whereas previously merchants were prepared to pay farmers 2s Sd per bushel on trucks at country stations for “A” grade Gartons of fair average quality, they will now nay this price for “A” Cartons of first-class quality only to supply local mills. As most of the trade in oats lately has been between merchant and merchant, it ia here that the weakening tendenefsDhas been most noticeable. Local merchants reCort that Garton oats have eased Id per ushel on recent rates. Potato v rices still remain low, and although a few orders were received from Auckland during the list few days they wore not sufficient to stimulate the market. Although, according to reports from Auckland, tho potato market there was practically bare when the s.s. Karma arrived with a fresh supply, the shipments per the s.s. Kaiapoi and s.s. Opihi will help to keep the northern market fairly well supplied. Then the s.s. Wingatui. which is due to leave Lyttelton early next week for Auckland, is taking potatoes amongst her cargo. She will probably lift a fair quantity at Lyttelton as c nc iocal firm alone is shipping 1500 saebs. The s.s. Katoa, due to leave Lyttelton for Auckland about the end of next week, will probably take a consignment of potatoes also. Tho Auckland market is, therefore, being well and regularly supplied with potatoes, and so merchants of that city air not keen buyers. 'litis is shown by tho fact that orders that have been placed in Chiustehuivh tins week are at a low price. Seeds are the only lines which are showing much activity at present, and in all cases prices remain firm at late rates. There is a gooil hit of business being done in clover. Linseed is firm, but there is not much offering.
