ASSAULT AND ROBBERY.

A MAORI CHARGED. NAPIER, August 19. A Maori named Kareua Hoepa was charged at the Police Court to-day with committing assault and robbery. The police evidence was to the effect that on Saturday- last the accused, while in a hotel bar at Fetane, saw Lars Amundsen, an old man. produce a roll of notes. When the men in the bar left at 6 p.m. accused followed Amundsen, who returned 10 minutes later, stating he had been robbed of £5. Accused subsequently had been spending freely. When approached by the police he at first said the money had been given to him. but on being told that the police had interviewed his mother he admitted having attacked Amundsen in the dark and taken the money. Iloepa pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence.
