POISONED GRAIN. It was resolved that the usual amount (£SO) be expended in poisoned grain. TEMPORARY LOANS. The question of the wisdom or otherwise of receiving temporary leans was raised through an inquiry by a local club as to whether the council would accept £250 at call and the rate of interest it would be prepared to pay. Or Rodger (chairman of the Finance Committee) said that it was apparent that before the close cf their financial year they would have an overdraft of anywhere between £9OOO and £IO,OOO, and it was probable the bank would be quite agreeable to being relieved of some of the responsibility. Though the application before the council was in respect of a very small amount, he believed they could secure up to £3OOO in this form of investment. Ho was rot favourable to the jaunty accepting money unless with the express approval of their banker. Cr Bennetts did not see any reason why they should study the bank, and considered if they could get money at a reasonable rate they should accept it. At the same time he would, as a member of the Finance Committee, exercise some caution, so that they would not be involved by a sudden demand for withdrawal. The Chairman expressed himself a.s not being in favour of taking money at call. It was resolved that the chairman interview the bank manager oil the subject. THE ENGINEER’S POSITION. The Chairman reported that nothing had so far been done in regard to filling the engineer’s position. The committee has considered the matter, and had decided to leave the matter for the full council to decide. After discussion it was. resolved: “That applications be invited for the position of engineer or qualified road inspector for the county, application to be made in writing, accompanied by credentials, and lodged with the chairman on or before August 6.” GENERAL. The accounts for the months of May and June, amounting to £3315 4s Id, were passed for payment. It was resolved that one truck of metal be ordered for road near Mr Herbert’s, and six trucks for Rae’s Junction-Edievale road. The engineer was instructed to communicate with the Public Works Department in regard to the £IOO vote for the Rae’s Junction-Edievale road, which had been withdrawn. Cr Leary asked for an expenditure of £SO on main road from borough boundary to Big Hill. —Tlie Chairman thought that before expending any money on the main road they should get a report from the engineer. —Cr Simpson agreed with the views of the chairman. —The Chairman said it had been an understanding that any money spent on the main road should be subsidised by the Government, but there was little hope of that in the present conditions.—Cr Leary, in view of the attitude expressed, moved that the chairman and engineer report at next meeting on the main road requirements. Cr Revie drew the council’s attention to that portion of the road between Heriot and Diumisdlie corner, which had been rrtetalled. The metal had been put down narrow, and was being scattered all over the place.—The engineer undertook to look into the matter.
