ERUPTION AT STROMBOLI
INDE3CRIBABLE PAX3C. HOME, June 28. After ominous rumblings, idtromboii has broken into eruption, which is the worst in its history. Dense clouds of steam were emitted, accompanied by violent explosions. Streams of incandescent stones were hurled to a great height, causing fires on the mountain side. Showers of ashes obscured the horizon lor hours. The population in the neighbourhood had difficulty in breathing. Panic spread, increasing at night, when indescribable terror reigned, people rushing to the shore, and entering the .sea. They crowded into boats, several of which were swamped, and it is believed that a number of persons were drowned, but the impenetrable darkness prevented details being obtained. Torpedo boats rushed from Messina with orders to send wireless messages in regard to the island e needs.
