KAITANGATA POULTRY CLUB

ANNUAL SHOW. The eighth annual show of the Kaitaiigata Poultry Club, which was held in W ilson s Hall on Wednesday and Thursday, proved a success in every way, the attendance on tne lii.su day being a record for any of the club's previous shows. Yesterday the hall was again tilled with interested poultry fanciers and spectators who doubtless gained further knowledge of the birds and their types, Exhibits were received from as far south as iSightcaps and a§ far north as Christchurch. The judge (Mr O. H. Cunningham, Invercargill), who carried out his duties in a most eiiicieut manner, was oi the opinion that the class of bird exhibited was equally as good as those of previous years, the white .Leghorn utility class being particularly strong. Inis class was in every respect an improveni_nt on last year’s exhibits. The Black Orpingtons utility class was also very good, as was tlieAVh.te Hocks exhibit of the same class. The exhibition class of White Wyandottes was exceptionally good, though not so many entries were received as at last yeuLs show, and the quality was of a good standard. Mr <J. Wilson (Nightcaps) showed some White Indian Runner ducks lor exhibition only which excited much interest. Much credit is due to the club officials, especially the committee, and Messrs M. L. Brown (secretary) and \\ . Jar vie (assistant secretary) for the success of the show rested entirely anon their efforts, On the 30th Mr C. Cussen (Government Poultry Instructor for the South Island) gave an interesting and educational address on “ Breeding, Mating, Utility Poultry {Standard, ana Incubation,” Mr John Pry do (club president) presiding over a good audience. Mr Cussen pointed out the benefit of having a standard as a guide to the selection and mating of birds. Though the “Utility Poultry Standard” had only been some 12 months on issue, the general class of birds that had been shown this year seemed to be improving. The lecturer stated that the chief points to look for in mating birds in order to produce birds nearest to the standard of excellence were purity of blood, vigour and constitution, and the capacity to produce and reproduce. The object the committee had in view when •drawing up the ‘‘standard” was to endeavour to place before utility breeders a class of bird that would combine beauty and utility. Mr Cussen was accorded a hearty ' ote of thanks for his address. The following are the results:— POULTRY. OPEN CLASS. Judg-::: Mr C. H. Cunningham (Invercargill).
