FORTUNE-TELLING.
CHRISTCHURCH, June ft. Judgment was given by Air M'Carthy, S.M., in the fortune-tolling cases, fines of £2 being inflicted on Sarah Coventry, Katherine Stanton, and Harriet Coupland. Tile magistrate bold, that defendants, who are mediums associated with the local Spiritualist Church, did in fact toll fortunes, and that proof of intention to deceive was not necessary. The mere fact, he said, that the doctrines of any religious body sanctioned a breach of the law was no justification for such breach. If the legislation wa* out of touch with modern conditions, the remedy lay with the Legislature, and not with the courts.
