BOWLING.

By Jack. FIRST TEST MATCH. • An account of the first test match between New Zealand and England, which was played at Musweil Hill, a suburb in the North of London, on Whitmonday, lias come to hand. The bowlers there are very proud of their green, and well they may be, for it is the best on which the visitors have so fur played. It was in perfect condition, and the Wifi 1 sun holiday turned out to he a p e lect day. From the hill suburb one could sec miles across the area which is London—a rare tiling indeed. Speeches before the opening of play were brief, but numerous. The Mayor of Hornsey welcomed the, visitors, and Mr A. P. London replied. Sir James Allen, who was there with Lady Allen, confined his remarks to a wish that the best team should win. Mr P. W. Ryde (president of Ihe Musweil Hill Club) referred to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and said: ‘AVe admired them not only for their military record, but for their gentlemanly and courteous conduct while they were in England.” To this Mr G. S. Gordon replied, and regretted the absence of their president (Mr M. F. Barnett), who was unable to bo present owing to indisposition.

The game throughout was a close and interesting- one. Possible the members of the New Zealand team were suffering from “staleness,” but on the other hand, the English team had the handicap of not having played together in any practice matches. At the 10th and 15th ends New Zealand had regained the loss of the first five, and opinion was in their favour, but in the last section of the match —contrary to their usual custom —they failed to hold their own.
