TEE COST OF LIVING.
FALLING RETAIL PRICES. We learn from the Monthly Abstract of Statistics that the index number for the three food groups as at May 15 (dominion weighted average) is 1792, a decrease of 13 points as compared with Trie preceding month’s figures (1805) and an increase of 67.48 per c-cnt. as compared with that for July, 1914. The decrease of 24 points in the groceries group is attributable’ to a general decline in the price of potatoes, rice, and tinned fruits, and, in some towns, sugar. Ino dairy produce group has its index number m creased by 14 points as the result of a fuither rise in the price of eggs. Further reductions in meat prices in certain centres aie responsible for a decline of 18 points in the meat index number.
