Tim tiirual meeting of the Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on the 23rd; present—Mr VY. K. S. Knight (chair, maiij, Dr JNewlands, Ales.tames Jackson, Mac-lie. Alaedonaid. Messrs W. i J alboys, it. Templeton, J. \Y. Dove, R. A. Rodger, A. F. Quoteh, and D. LarnacT.. The Town Clerk. Lawrence, i rote stating- that the cost of certain drainage work would be £l5O. The borough was prepared to carry out the work provided that the board contributed £IOO. Referred to the Finance Committee. The lion. G. M. i homson wrote stating that a proposal to start leligioe.a sen i<-«* on Sunday mornings for the Hospital nurses had come before the session ot Knox Church. The session had set up a committee to make the necessary arrangement* and desired to have the approval of the board. The set vices would be under the immediate care o r the Rev. A. AV. Kinmoiit. but would be undenominational in character.—The Medical Superintendent reported that the matron agreed with him that the Sunday morning ward work could l>e so arranged as to allow a proportion of the : arses on duty being spared to enable them to attend the services. The -jucetion of nurses attending the services when off duty was a peisoeal matter and did not require the permission of the board. -Approved. The Town Ch-u-k, Palmerston, wro.e advising that in *in> opinion of the council the -district would be amply served in tlio meantime if a district nurse were appointed, thereby saving a considerable sum of mon-v that would be required for the purchase of a suitable building, salaries, and general upkeep of the proposed maternity hospital. The writer forwarded a copy of a letter scut t . the Distiic-t Health Officer in March, embodying the above opinion and stating that none of ihe councillors had heard of any fatality or case of hardship caused by the absence of such an institution. — The letter was referred to the Finance Committee. The following re.-olution was carried, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Dir Talboys: - ‘That thi.-* board places on record its beat tliunk* for the ser- ices rendered by the members of ihe recent Kaitangata. Hospital Committee. The assistance of these gentlemen has been given with every heerfidness, and the splendid reports which have been received from time to time of the manner- in which ,his hospital was conducted and the high state ol efficiency maintained, reflects on the nonimine, for the care and attention bestowed in carrying oet its work.
