PORT CHALMERS OLD IDENTITIES’ ASSOCIATION.

The usual quarterly meeting of the Port Chalmers Old Identities’ Association was held in tho Town Hall on the 16th, Mr Knewstubb, the president, in the chair. A large number of members were present, and, together with visitors from as far north as Taranaki, showed by hearty applause their appreciation of a most enjoyable programme. About 12 months ago the association decided to give a prize for the best essay on “The Settlement ot Otago,” to lx> competed for bv the children of the upper standards of the Port Chalmers District High School. Through the generosity of their president, tho association was able to give three prizes, which were awarded by Dr Fulton, who kindly consented to judge, as follows: —F’irst, W. Legal (Waitati); second, F. Thomson; third, E. Fletcher. During the evening Messrs Thomson and De Maus read papers on early days and rominesiccnoes of Port Chalmers. Mr T'hos. Fleming, brother of the late Andrew Fleming, first school master at Lower Harbour, presented to the association a framed photo of the late Mr Fleming. This gift was very much appreciated by the association, which decid' d to pass the photo on to Mr Box, of Lower Harbour, for exhibition at that school for a period. During the evening songs were sung by the Misses Pritchard and Gale, Messrs Hughes and Smillio. a violin solo given by Master Legal, and a humorous recitation bv Miss Aslin. Miss Mackie and Miss Drake acted ns accompanists.
