Friday evening. Mr Allan Wilkie's Shakespearean season commenced on Wednesday evening’, when “Hamlet” was staged at His Majesty's theatre There was a- crowded house, giving ample evidence of the fact that Shakespearean plays are still popular. On Thursday afternoon the Women’s Club gave a large “At home” for Mr and Mrs Allan Wilkie. The president (Mrs Ferguson) received the gue-w.s in the vestibule, from which they passed on to the large elubroom, where Mrs Ferguson gave a short address of welcome to Mr and Mrs Wilkie, to which Mr 'A ill-lie- suitably replied. Some present were Mesdames Robert Gilkison, J. Hutchison, Morrell, Cameron, -i/apley, Priest. Wakefield, Holmes, L. Wilson, Leech, Statham, Hanlon, Hudson, Brugh, Tlios. On Thursday evening a delightful dinner was given at the Fevnliill Club by Messrs Sherman, Siae. and Sinclair. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs G afth Gallaway, Mrs Raymond Dr and Mrs 'Stanley Batchelor, Misses Hag’gitt, D. Ramsay, Laidlaw, G allaway, Edmond, Kempt home, A. Cora E Turnbull, daughter of the late Mr John Turnbull, Balclutlia, and Mrs Turnbull, Garden terrace, Dunedin, to Mr Lionel G. Wright, second son of Mr W. R. Wright, 62 Rhodes street, Wuimate. An error was made in last week’s issue in stating the Misses Hunt, instead of the Misses Hart, Anderson’s Bay, had given .a dance. The Women’s Club celebrated the seventh anniversary of the club on Friday evening by giving a “birthday party,” and in order to allow a large attendance c-f members to be present St. Paul’s Schoolroom was taken for the occasion. The president (Mrs Lindo Ferguson), who was attired in a very handsome gown of black and gold and diamond ornaments, was presented on arrival with a glorious bouquet of violets from the "Gardening Circle.” The opening address was made by the president, and was cleverly replied to by Miss Alexander. The programme then commenced by Mrs James Glendining’s delightful incidental music. She was followed bv Miss D. Ramsay, playing a pianoforte solo. Miss Una Rattray gave a song. Two members of the Play-reading Circle (Mrs .statham and Miss Glen dining) acted a very smart little play called “A Square Peg.”” More songs by Mrs Hall and Miss Emery followed. Another very excellent play, “The Lost Rehearsal,” was acted by Mesdames Morrell, Dourly, J. Hutchison. MTvibben, and Miss James. A delightful reading by Mesdames Norman, Brickell, Statham, and Miss Alexander concluded (he programme. Tea and light refreshments were then served, and a large birthday rake was carried in by two of the junior members. The hall was beautifully decorated, and small tables arranged where friends grouped round for supper. Amongst those present wore Mesdames R. She was an accomplished musician, and beloved by all who knew her, and the greatest sympathy is felt for Mr Mcnteath and his four young children.

The excitement created thereby was made manifest by the impressively large number of. motor cars which streamed out from town and packed in ever}' available road space for a long distance from tho centre point—the bridge. The weather assumed a somewhat changed aspect, which was disappointing after tlie long spell of continuous sunshine which favoured- tlie whole of the training' operations. A.s the crowds of spectators assembled on the bridge and banks of tlie river, awaiting the event, v hey were regaled with martial music alternately by tire band of the Eighth Mounted Rifles and the Blenheim Pipe Band. WELLINGTON, June 13. The second quarterly social gathering of tlie Wellington branch of the Navy League was held in tho Town Hall cn Tuesday evening, and was a * T cry su'cc?ssful affair altogether. Tho first part of the evening comprised a programme of musical and elo-cu:ion-ary items, Mr Firth (president of the executive) who occupied the chair, recited tho immortal story of Sir Richard Grenvilles last light; Mr G. Williams, Captain C hud ley, .and Mr Goudie singing, and Mr Inch gavo a recitation. Miss Watkins was tho accompanist. Upon the completion of the programme Mrs Darling (hon. secretary of the Ladies’ Auxiliary) was presented by Mr Firth on bcli all of tho Ho ad quarter 3 Executive Committee in London, with a special service medal of the Navy League, together with a letter from the lion, secretary, Rear-admiral Hotham, in which the executive expressed its indebtedness to Mrs Darling for the services she had rendered tho league. Mr Firth, on behalf of tlie Wellington executive, also paid a tribute to Mi-3 Darling’s work for the league in Wellington, and said it was with the keenest pleasure that they saw her receive- this recognition of her work. Three cheers tor Mrs Darling concluded the little ceremony. Supper, which was in the charge cf the Entertainment Committee, was handed arc-un-J, after which dancing took place, a considerable influx of the younger members of tho league having taken place towards the later part of tlie evening. At the monthly meeting of tho Wellington Red Cross Committee great regret was expressed at the resignation of Miss Margaret Moncktcn from the managership of the Red Cross Club at Trent.ham Alilitary Hospital. Aliss Monckton, with Miss Greta Ewen, started the club at Treat-ham as soon as the Lowry Bay Convalescent Home (in which work that was very akin to that at Trentham v,-as carried out by them- both for fho sick and wounded soldiers) was closed. Lady' Luke pa.id a very warm tribute to Miss Mcnckton’s work, and said that it hud meant a great deal to tho committee to have such a one as she to whom they could pin their faith. A great amount of care and loving 1 service had been put into her work and her services for al! that time (a matter of more than feur years or so) had been purely of a voluntary nature. The committee decided that a letter could be written to- Alis-s Mon-ck-ton conveying their regret at her resignation, but wishing her all happiness and prosperity in her new life. Miss Monckton is to be married shortly. An interesting event to;k place at Victoria College on Tuesday, when tho new women’s common room in the wing now being erected was opened. The members of tho College Council, the professors and their wives, and other guests were received and welcomed by the members of the Women’s Club Committee. Elocutionary and musical items were given during the course of the evening bv Miss Pigou, Aliss V. ilson, Miss Davey, Alias Parkinson, Aliss Baillie, Mr Evans, and Mr Kirk. A gift to the common room of a picture by Miss E. 11. Davies was verv much appreciated, and to Mrs Kankin-e’Brown the’students are very grateful for the way in which she helped them to plan the decorations of their room, which are charmingly carried out in blue and gold. She gave them a picture a-3 well for their room.’ The evening came to an end with tlie singing of the college song, final chorus, and the National Anthem. blue, and a hat of black panne. She, too, carried a bouquet of violets, three flowers being a distinctive feature of the wedding. The best man was Mr Bartholomew, of Podding. Airs Craigie wore a navy blue costume, with a black hat trimmed with white wings, and the bridegroom's mother was in brown channelise over which she were a, sable coat and a small brown hat to match. After the ceremony Air and Airs Craigi o entertained their guests at a vvedairig luncheon at the Midland Hotel, and later Mr and Mrs Kennedy left by motor lor the north, the bride travelling m u m-ole-coloured gabardine costume, with n musquash coat, and a ribbon hat to match her costume. A very pleasant party was held at the Pioneer Club yesterday afternoon for Miss Dorothea Spinney, and members who had met her on her previous visit to Wellington were delighted to renew an acquaintanceship in some cases a friendship—that had hren particularly interesting. In the unavoidable absence of the president, Dr Agios Bennett, Mrs J. Myers received Miss Spinney, who was accompanied by her sister, Mrs Do one. A brief musical programme had been arranged, Mrs Town ley and Mrs Shaw singing, the-? r accompaniments being played by Madame Ginn, director oi tlie club's" musical circle.
