OTAGO v. MASTERTON. The 13 unfinished games in the match oe tween Otago and Masterton were resumed on Saturday night. At board No. 1 Mr Dunlop (Otago) had a hot attack from Mr P. Summer (Masterton), and every minute the present thought the champion (Mr Dunlop) would register, but at 11 p.m. the game was still unfinished, and the attack had by then been so well warded off that the' local captain, who was adjudicating on the unfinished games, was agreeable to accept ‘a uraw. Masterton, however, claimed a win, so the position, not being an easy one to decide, it was agreed to send the game for an independent award. At board 2 an uninteresting game in which the local player (Mr °A.~ W.’ O Davies) sacrificed material to try and break down the stonewall defence of Mir F Kummer, and was left at the call of time with the worst game, resulted in a win for Masterton At boards o and 4 the players themselves agreed to a draw just before play was stopped. The game, at. board 5, between Mr S. S. Myers (Otago) and W. Kummer resulted in a win for Otago. Mr J. D Vv right, on board 6, scored a good win just prior to 11 p.m. The games at boards 7. 11, and 12 were left over for ar, independent verdict at the request of the Masterton players, although they appear to be distinct wins for the local cl u b. At board _ No. 8 Mr D. 11. Hastings (Otago) sacrificed a bishop for two pawns wit it what appeared to be a good prospect o? breaking down his opponent’s defence. A hard struggle ensued, and at a late hour a win for Masterton was recorded. At board No. 9. Mr N. Fulton (Otago) carried his game through to the time, adjudication, and although his position was elightilv better, a draw -was agreed to. At board No. 10 Mr A. 11. Alien (Otago) lost after a close game, lasting nearly to the end of the final sitting. At boards 13 and 14 the local players made slips and lost their games Altogether an c-niov tble match terminafwd with a very even result, and, possibly, when the deferred awards for the four unfinished games come to hand, the result will bo seven games each. This will, of course, mean a. drawn match, which may he regarded as i\ satisfactory result., in view of the feet that the local club was without the services of several strong players.
