WRECK OF A KETCH.
CLAIM FOR INSURANCE CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. Mr Justice Herdman and a special jury have been engaged during the past two days hearing a claim brought by Mr Henry Burnett Jones against the New Zealand In- .. simmee Company for £ISOO, tho amount of ’the insurance on the ketch_ Fanny, which was destroyed by fire in Whangaroa Harbour, Chatham Islands, in April last, and the plaintiff claimed that while drying the combustion chamber an explosion occurred, resulting in the destruction of the launch. The defence alleged that arson was responsible for the destruction of the vessel, which allegation was subsequently withdrawn. Iho defence then contem led that plaintiff’s method of drying the combustion chamber was highly dangerous, and the risk would not have been accepted had the company known of its employment. The jury found for plaintiff, but judgment was not entered up pending argument on certain nonsuit points.
