An unusual charge was preferred against a middle-aged man in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. lie was charged with stealing four candlestick* from the Roman Catholic Church. Boulcott street. A remand until Monday was granted on the application of Chief Defective Ward, who said the accused went to the ehurch for his devotions. On these being completed he went to the altar, took the candlesticks, disposed of them to a secondhand dealer, and then proceeded to “ buy beer.”
