Friday evening. On Friday evening last week Mrs Laidlaw gave a very enjoyable dance at her residence, Pitt street. The drawing room and hall were used for dancing, ;ukl in the dining to cm a delicious supper was served, the tables being arranged with chrysanthemum 3 and loses. Mrs Tescliemaker held a small reception after the ceremony, to which only relatives and a few old friends wore invitc-d. * On Monday afternoon the death occurred at Middleton of Lady Bowen, widow of the late Sir Charles Bowen, M.L.C., and daughter of the late Canon Markham, rector of Great Horksley, Essex, and Canon of Windsor. Lady Bowen was 82 years of age at the time of her death. By her kindly interest and ready sympathy she had won the love of a large circle of friends, by whom she will be greatly missed. With the exception cf Mrs John Studholme and Mr Charles Bowen the family were all eoKembled at the time of her death, and much sympathy is felt for them in their Borrow.

GREYMOTJTH June 8. On Friday evening the Caledonian Society opened its 1921-1922 season with an enjoyable lngleside. The society still continues to grow in popularity, judging by the large numbers who had their names placed on the membership roll. A very pleasant time was spent in song and dance. Mesdames Bush and P Hamilton had charge of the supper arrangements, and were ably assisted by Mesdames Baxter, M'Quee-n, and Cork. The first social of the season of the combined Grey mouth Bowling and Croquet Clubs was held last evening in the Druids' Hall. A pleasant time was spent at bridge and 500. Miss G. One of the most successful and enjoyable balls held in Blenheim took place in St. Patrick's Hall on Thursday evening last, when the spinsters and bachelors of Blenheim entertained a very large assemblage of people from all round Marlborough. Consider able praise is due to the committee and joint secretaries for the unlimited effort and untiring energy displayed in producing such a popular event. The hali itself was beautifully decorated with fernery, palms, and crimson flowers, and the floor was in excellent order for dancing. A recherche supper was arranged in' the large supper room, a-s well as in a large marquee erected at the side adjoining the entrance to the hall, and the tables wore artistically arranged with large baskets of chrysanthemums and autumn leaves. The wedding of Miss Constance Hall, only daughter cf Mr and Mrs J. B. Hall, “Eilersne,” Makairo, to Mr Norman Groves, of Bush Grove, Mastcrton (well-known in tennis circles), took place on Wednesday last. The ceremony was performed at “Ellerslie,” the house and grounds having been beautifully decorated for the occasion. A feature was a huge bell of white and gold chrysanthemums under which the Rev. Sykes performed the ceremony. The bride was given away by her father, and wore a simply designed frock cf white crepe de chine draped with georgette and the conventional veil and orange blossoms. The bridesmaids were the Misses G. M. K. Wilson and Christie Groves, the bridegroom being attended by Mr Merrill Hall as best man. The guests included many prominent settlers from all parts of the province. Mr and Mrs Groves left by car for New Plymouth, the bride travelling m a light grey costume with hat to match. On Tuesday afternoon a very pleasant little ceremony took place .at the **ippled Soldiers’ and Sailors' Hostel, when Mrs Boden, who has acted as secretary for the hostel ever since it was established (about four years now) and who has removed now with her family to Palmerston North, was presented by the committee, matron, and submatron of the hostel with an initialled and very handsome leather suit-case as a loken cl their appreciation of her services. Phoebe Myers made the presentation, and in doing so spoke of the way in which Mrs Boden had thrown herself in to this work for the soldiers, in which she had not spared herself They greatly regretted her removal to Palmerston North, but wished her all good .fortune in her new home. Mrs Boden, who was much surprised and affected by what had been said and by the gift which had been made to her, briefly replied. Afternon tea was a very pleasant addition to the occasion. A pleasant party organised by the Library Committee of the Pioneer Club in aid of the library funds was held on Thursday afternoon, and realised the very satisfactory sum of £25. All kinds of attractions had been arranged for the entertainment of members and their friends, and stalls for the sale of home-made cakes, sweets, flowers, pot plants, and books very materially added to the proceeds.
