TAIERI DRAINAGE
The members of the Taieri River Trust, accompanied by the engineer and clerk, paid a visit ot inspection to the plain on Thursday. A start was made from Alosgiei at 9 a. ill. and iVioynUmn's dam visited, i-lie Parly crossed the Otokia bridge and inspected the bank erected at tne time of tne big break some lour years ago. Various drains en route to the Henley pumping station occupied tlie board's attention. A good deal of time was spent in and around the pumps, and alter lunch me land near Bull Creek was crossed, on the banks of the \\ aipori. Mr Marshall proposed erecting a chain of concrete openings with lids, which would allow the water to drain off the land, and yet prevent the Waipori water from getting in. At tho point where he proposed the openings be inserted, the bank was cut last flood in several places to allow the water to drain away, but these cuts also provided a channel which allowed the river water to pour though and flood the laud to a greater depth. The openings proposed would prevent this in future. Air Marshall had a model in wood of what he proposed should be erected. Ihe need for some extra drains near Henley station was emphasised—or rather that, some existing ones be made to carry drainage of a certain area to the river. From llenlev the board proceeded to Berwick, and went a short distance up tho Berwick Flat. The drainage of the southern portion of the plain, including the contour, was viewed from Scott s Hill, near Berwick, and the channel followed up to the intake between Out.ram and \\ oodsido. The object of the visit was mainly to allow the Government members to become acquainted with the district and the board’s works, and from the way tho ground wag covered yesterday not many points of- interest could have escaped their notice. Thg classifiers have been around the district, and their report will he before the board at its next meeting.
