Natural Egg Production versus Forcing South African Scientist forwards complete and independent proof that Karswood Poultry Spice (containing ground insects) is NOT forcing—but produces eggs naturally. His conclusions are based on his own careful experiments with White Leghorns, and postmortem examinations of fowls killed specially for the purpose. B i It never pays to “kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.” Prom time immemorial writers on I poultry topics have 'rightlywarned poul-try-keepers against the use of hot, pun- —, gent, forcing spices x which, though they may stimulate eggproduction for a time, sooner or later cause rupture of the egg passage, with consequent death. A B G of EggProduction. Look at the sketch opposite. At the top of the sketch you have the ovary of egg-cluster, which is like a bunch of grapes. These unCi iv v. y' i ripe yolks are of FvN- different sizes according to the stages of their development, and when the bird is laying these yolks ripen one after the other and drop into the egg-tube at the point on the sketch marked A. Our artist has shown you the top of the funnel-shaped opening of the egg-tube which receives the ripe yolk; but in the actual hen this tube goes right on and actually encloses the egg-cluster. The Dae Osr of Forcing. When the egg is laid naturally, it drops into this funnel-shaped opening, and passes down the egg-tube marked B on the sketch, receiving layer upon layer of “white” in its passage, and finally the coating of shell, until it arrives at the point marked C as a complete egg ready for laying. When the bird is forced, however, note what happens. Instead of dropping naturally into the funnelshaped opening of the egg-tube, the yolk strains at the side of the tube, because it is being forced, and sooner or later the side of the egg-tube bursts, or ruptur es, which allows the yolk to drop into the abdominal cavity of the fowl, thereby setting up peritonitis with consequent death. There is another thing which can happen when birds are forced. The yolk in the egg-cluster is enclosed in a skin sack. The skin sack is attached to the egg-cluster by a stalk, or pedicle. As the yolk gets bigger the skin sack gradually gets thinner like a child’s balloon when blown up. It gets thinnest at its widest part, which then shows a pale belt known as the stigma, which, in natural eggproduction, bursts to let the yolk out. When the bird is fed on hot forcing spice, however, this natural bursting of the egg-sack does not take place. Instead of this, the egg sack, and the stalk attached to it, break, or tear, loose from the eggcluster, and this sets up acute inflammation which causes death. Positive Proof that Karswood Spies is HOT Forcing. What the Sou'.h African Poultry Specialist says : This experiment in egg production should be read by every poultry-keeper—whether he has sir fowls or six thousand. From John F. Marshall, Poultry Food Specialist. 183 Joppa Street, Johannesburg, South Africa: 12th August, 1920. To Karswood. Manchester. The contents of enclosed letter, which we have received from a client of yours, may Interest you. John F. Marshall. From George Bustin, Poultry Disease Specialist, 489 Proes Street, Arcadia. Pretoria. Transvaal: "The following experiments with Karsood Poultry Spice sold by you. and which bought and tested on behalf of some of my clients, to determine if it had any insurious effect on the system and reproductive organs of the hen, may be of interest to you. “So many spiced foods (many of which contain Cayenne Pepper and other injurious ingredients) are sold to the public, which cause what is termed yolk hypertrophy. that is, the yolks become much larger than normal, and these big yolks are due to a diseased condition of the organs, caused by too much forcing for egg-pro-duction. with the result that the egg breaks loose from the ovary without rupture of the follicle wall along the stigma, but breaks and tears loose the stalk or pedicle of the follicle, with consequent death. ‘‘With your Karswood Poultry spice I found no such indications. ‘‘l treated a number of backward White Leghorn Hens (some partly in second moult), with the result that after seven days they began to lay, and it also completed their moult within fourteen days. “That was two months ago. They have been laying continuously since April 20th, and are still doing their duty, at a time when new-laid eggs are 5/- to 6/- a dozen on the market, and unobtainable from most poultry yards. (Note: April is in the middle of the South African winter.) “I killed one of the hens treated with Karswood Poultry Spice, also one which was not treated, and in comparison I found the organs of the hen which had Karswood Poultry Spice in far healthier and better condition than the bird which had no Karswood Poultry Spice. “Such organs as the ovary, oviele, stigma, funnel (or infundebellum) of the egg-tube were in splendid condition. In fact, in every portion down the opening of the cloaca, which, as you know, opens into the rectum, the oviduct, and the ureters or kidney-ducts, were In the same condition. “I must conclude by saying that birds which have Karswood Poultry Spice are in a firmer reproductive fettle than those without. “The makers and your firm are to be congratulated upon such a useful adjunct to successful poultry-keeping.” 11th June. 1920. (Signed) George Bustin. Everyone who carefully reads this explanation can see for himself that if Karswood Poultry Spice (containing ground insects) did FORCE the birds, Professor Bustin (whose experiments are detailed below) could not possibly have failed to find distinct and obvious evidence of the forcing. No evidence of forcing was found by Professor Bustin in the birds which had had Karswood Poultry Spice (containing ground insects). There was no evidence. There was no forcing. Instead of bad evidence the Professor found good evidence. He found that the egg organs of the birds which had Karswood Poultry Spice (to quote his own words): “In far healthier and better condition than the birds which had no Karswood Poultry Spice.” In fact, the report goes further than this. It distinctly states that “birds which have Karswood Poultry Spice are in a firmer reproductive fettle than those without.” MOTE BY KARSWOOD. If there is one thing more than another on which the English poultry-keeper holds strong opinions, it is on the foolishness of forcing fowls to lay eggs by using condiments containing Cayenne Pepper. We have little doubt that our New Zealand cousins are just as prejudiced against hot forcing spices as wo are at home—and so we particularly welcome this positive evidence from a Colonial poultry-keeper that Karswood Poultry Spice (containing ground insects) is not forcing. Used on H.M. the King’s Poultry Farm at Windsor, England. Karswood Poultry Spice is used on His Majesty the King’s Poultry Farm at Windsor, for which lewt. was recently ordered through Messrs. G. R. Cross and Son, of Windsor. It is also used by over 500,000 poultrykeepers, and sold by 17,000 poultry food dealers in the United Kingdom. The sales of Karswood Poultry Spice are several times greater than the sales of all other Poultry Spices and Poultry Powders on the English market put together, and New Zealand poultry-keepers can rest assured that it is the best the “Old Country” has to offer them.
