THE SHIPPING STRIKE.
TERMS OF THE SETTLEMENT. SYDNEY, February 26. It is estimated that over £1,200,000 has been lost in wages in consequence of the shipping strike. ihe settlement which has been reached provides that no question of manning is to be raised regarding the ships not being put into commission immediately. The manning question will be decided by a Manning Committee, equally representing the shipowners and the seamen. This committee will be constituted by March 1 at the latest, and its decisions will be binding on both parties. . A conference on the suggested alterations of the present general agreement as to wages and conditions will be held within a fortnight. The agreement is to continue in force until December 31, or until it is mutually determined. The recommissioning of ships will proceed as quickly as possible. Arrangements are being made for the despatch of the Mnheno to Auckland on Monday afternoon.
