WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council was attended on Friday by Crs M'Gill (chairman), Briscoe, M‘Lachlan, Laley, Gilmore, and Overton. The Chairman welcomed Cr Gilmore, a new member. The appointment of a surfaceman for II awksbury Riding was left in the hands of the chairman and the inspector. If was decided to obtain a report from the inspector as to the state of the road at Porteous's Hill. John Warren (Upper Waitati) drew the council’s attention to the state of the Pigeon Flat road, and asked that- it should be made passable for winter traffic. —Inspector to report P. A. N. Wilson (Evansdale) asked the council to do something to stop cattle and horses wandering about in the clitch from the Main read towards the railway station, which he had had cleaned out. —Received. D. Phillips (Dunedin) drew the council’s attention to the state of Bay road, Warrington. stating that the road had not had much, if any attention during the last four years, and was quite impassable for pedestrians.—lnspector to report. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The Inspector reported that all of the metal had been spread on Jeffries’s road, and the greater part of the road surfaced and the metal blinded. About two yards of gravel to the chain was being spread on top of the metal. Rotten rock was being carted and spread over the rough metal on the upper part of the Ilavvksbury Bush road, and gravel was being used for the lower portion. A few days’ carting of rotten rock wore required to patch the Quarry ?'oad. Gravel and rock had been spread on the soft portions of the Zigzag road, and the ruts along the flat filled in. The looso metal on Shaw’s road had been raked off and the road blinded with clay, but portion of the road through the Mental Hospital grounds required about 80 tons of Ijin metal, as it was very rough and uneven. The remainder of the Quarry road had been surfaced, and gravel spread at the Orokonui bridge and on the road through the township. About half of the metal for

j the Waitati-Wakari road was broken and was being spread. Several portions of the road were being graded before the metal was laid down. Two 6in pipe culverts were required at a cost of about £4. —The report was adopted, and the inspector authorised to procure the necessary cided to draw the attention of the Men>tal Hospital authorities to the state of the road there.
