“SAVE THE BABIES.”

SUCCESSFUL GARDEN FETE. The watchword of the Royal New Zealand Society lor the Ltoaltfi ol Women and Children is “Save the Babies,” and flags and bannerets bearing that motto were conspicuous on Saturday afternoon at the residence of Mr P. C. Neill, wliere a garden iete was held in aid ot tiro society’s nmus. Everything was in favour of the gathering, the weatlier being delightful lor an openair function, and the®result was a success in every way. The beautifully-iaicl-out grounds were in spick-and-span condition, evidencing the care bestowed upon them by the gardeners, and bunting displayed at many vantage points added greatly to the gaiety of the scene. Numerous stalls were laid out in shady nooks, and were literally laden with goods. There was no lack of amusement, either, the sideshows being both varied and numerous. Everywhere there were signs of careful organisation, yet these were never intrusive, showing that attention to detail that rendered supervision almost superfluous. Mesdarnes G. W. Rattray and M. A. Moore were responsible for this careful organisation, and they were loyally assisted by a strong committee and many friends. Those who did not come to buy amused themselves by strolling through the spacious grounds, where they found much to interest and attract them, the avenues of English trees in particular being much admired. Much of the success of the effort was due to the generous donations of friends from a distance, including two lon-y loads of produce from the Taieri, and most acceptable donations of flowers and other goods from Sawyer’s Bay and Port Chalmers. Amongst those who assisted in a general way may be specially mentioned Messrs George Neale and A. and C. Hart. The Band of the Fourth Regiment, under Lieutenant George, played a most enjoyable programme of music. One of the chief attractions was the afternoon tea tent—an immense marquee—which was thronged during the busiest hours of the day.
