Dickens selected this institution as the model for the workhouse which was the scene of Oliver’s childhood. Mr Bumble, the parish beadle, who married the widow Gorney and ruled over the workhouse, finally ended his days with his wife as residents in the institute where they had formerly bullied the poor inmates.
