SOUTHLAND MARKETS. (Fbom Our Own Correspondents.) INVERCARGILL, February 13. The stock market has teen quiet during the past week, with very little alteration from last week’s quotations. The only line being inquired for "is forward lambs suitable for rape. These are in good demand, and we can probably anticipate a demand from the north for this class of stock. Freezing buyers continue to operate as fast as spare will permit at slightly reduced rates. The lesuit of large numbers of fat stock going into the freezing works must necessarily create a demand for store stuff, but very few of the graziers seem inclined to do any business at the present time, or on the present basis of values, the feeling being general that prices for store sheep must still further decrease to allow a satisfactory margin of profit for graziers handling this cla.ss of stuff. The cattle market shows very little change, and the slight reduction in freezing prices for fat cattle has the tendency of still further reducing the prices of store cattle as well as fat. The following prices may be quoted : Fat Sheep.—Extra prime freezing wethers, up to 30s; good, 24s to 27s 6d; lighter sorts, 30s to 225; fat ewes, up to 245; good freezing ewes, 193 to 21s; fat lambs, extra prime, up to 355; good freezing lambs, 26s to 30s, according to weights. Store Sheep.—Good forward rape lambs, 18s to 21s; medium sorts, 13s to 16s; small and cull lambs, from 5s to 8s; good forward four and six-tooth wethers, 17s to 20s; two-tooth wethers, 103 to 18s; two-tooth ewes, about same qi:otations as wethers; good four-tooth ewes, up to 235; soundmouthed breeding ewes, from 15s to 19s; failing-mouthed ewes, 6s to 10s, according to condition . Fat Cattle.—These have quite receded to freezing rates, and will not alter except by an increase or decrease in freezing rates. Store Cattle.—Good, forward three-year-old bullocks, up to #10; 2J-year-old, £6 10s to £7 10s; yearling steers, £3 to £4 10s; forward empty cows, up to £7; two-vear-old heifers, £6 to £7; yearling heifers, £2 10s to £4. A few good lines of dairy heifers, factory calvera are realising higher values, nccordin g to their quality and conic!tion. OAMARU MARKETS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) OAMARU, February 19. The stock market remains in a lifeless condition. There are sellers of store wethers and other classes of sheep, but no buyers can be found. Fat lambs have been sold at 26s and 27 s, according to weight, and rape lambs at anything from 21s to 23s 9d, according to size and condition. A little business has been done in cattle in modest lines at the following prices: Store steers, 2£ years old, £7 10s; mixedsex yearlings, 30s; calves, 10s to 15s; old cows as potters, 20s to 30s; bulls as potters, £3 to £4; springing heifers have changed hands at from £8 to £lO. BUTTER AND CHEESE. SHIPPING SPACE ALLOTTED. Ths secretary of the South Island Dairy Association (Mr G. A. Lamb) has been advised that the following shipping space has been allotted: —From Lyttelton, per Ruapehu, 24,000 boxes o.f butter, 3500 crates of cheese. From Port Chalmers, per Ruapehu, 6000 boxes of buter; per Mahana, 4500 crates cheese. From Bluff, per Otarama, 3000 crates cheese; per Ruapehu, 8500 crates cheese. PORK, BACON, HAMS, AND LARD. It has been decided that the remission of duty on pork, bacon, hams, and lard imported from Australia is to cease as regards such goods shipped on the exporting vessel after the 19th March next. NECESSITY FOR WHEAT IMPORTATION. Discussing _ the supply of milling wheat for the coming year in Auckland recently, Hr W. G. M’Donald, the Wheat Controller, said that the total yield from the new harvest was estimated at 5,975,000 bushels. The quantity to be imported would depend upon the milling quality of tile wheat when thrashed. It was too early to state definitely the quality of this season’s grain, but, judging by samples which have been received by the Department of Commerce, it was expected to be superior. The recent unfavourable weather in Canterbury had not affected harvest prospects. Mr M’Dcrald said there would be no carry-over from last season, but as the estimated requirements of 8,090,000 bushels included fowl feed and stock foods, it might be possible io make up the deficiency if rhe New Zealand crop was of go-od quality, by the importation of lower grade wheat for fowl feed and stock foods. Between January 1 and December 31, 1920. the Government liar] imported from Australia about 2,000,000 bushels, which had been pur-, chased in 1918, one of Ihe terms of the purchase being that the storage was to be provided free in Australia. Tills purchase had been exhausted. At present the Government had no unexpired contracts to purchase, and it had no further supplies of wheat. If the Government had to buy in Australia it would not pay more than parity. Advice received within the past few days showed that the Australian market was rapidly receding. THE NEW ZEALAND LOAN AND MERCANTILE AGENCY COMPANY. The directors of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company stated in their annual report that more satisfactory conditions had on the whole prevailed throughout the year, especially in connection with New Zealand, and notwithstanding a certain falling off owing to climatic disturbances in the commonwealth, the profits for - the period under review showed an improvement upon the figures for the previous year. After paying interest on the first and second mortgage debenture stocks, making provision for bad and doubtful debts and other contingencies, adding £25,000 to general reserve, and writing £IO,OOO off premises, there remained a balance of £160,338 9s 9d. Out of this amount the directors had applied to writing down investments to the market value at June 30 a sum of £38,592 12s lcl; leaving a balance of net revenue of £121,745 17s Sd. Out of this amount £50,000 was paid as an interim dividend of 2J- per cent, on the ordinary and cumulative preference stocks, less income tax, and the directors had appropriated a sum of £IO,OOO to the staff benevolent fund. This left a balance of £61,‘745 17s Bd, and the balance carried! forward as at July 1, 1919, was £26,745 17s Bcl, totalling £88,491 15s 4d. Out of this the directors recommended the following distributions:—Final dividend of 2J per cent, on £1,000,000 5 per cent, cumulative preference slock, less income tax at 4s 6d in the £, £25,000; final dividend of 2 per cent., free ci income tax, on £1,000,000 ordinary stock, £20,000; bonus of 2 per cent., free of income tax, on £1,000,000 ordinary stock, £20,000; leaving to be carried forward £23,491 15s 4d.
