A HORRIBLE TRAGEDY
FATHER MURDERS lIIS SON. THEN ATTEMPTS SUICIDE. DARGAVILLE. January 17. A terrible murder and attempted suicide occurred at Marohemo, near Maungaturoto, yesterday morning. At 8 o’clock William Raw!in Needham, aged 18. was busy separating cream, when an altercation took place with his father, Thomas Needham, aged 65. The father picked up a broom, knocked his son down, and belaboured him with the broom till he was killed. 'Phe body was frightfully knocked about. When the father realised tho position he out his own throat with a knife, but this proving ineffectual he secured a rope to hang himself, but was too weak to carry the plan into effect. Constable Boag was promptly pn the
scene, and bad Needham, sen., removed to Paparoa Hospital. The wound is not likely to prove fatal.
