WORKERS’ EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION.
“UNJUSTIFIABLE ATTACK BY CHANCELLOR.” i 'WELLINGTON, January 21. Tho District Council of the Workers’ Educational Association passed the following motions: 1. That the council strongly resents the unjustifiable attack made by the Chancellor and some members of the University Senate which convey to the public the idea that the Workers’ Educational Association has been carrying on revolutionary propaganda instead of performing the educational work for which it has been formed. 2. That the council welcomes the appointment by the Senate of a committee to inquire into the way in which the funds granted by the university for Workers Educational Association purposes are being used, and as inaccurate statements about the Workers’ Educational Association will do harm to that organisation, it urges that the committee should be set up at once to reiiort at an early date. CANTERBURY CENTRE. The Canterbury Centre of the Workers' Educational Association, under the direction of Professor Uondliffe and Professor Shelley, of Canterbury College, carried out the first summer school ever held in the Dominion, at Oxford, North Canterbury, during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The school, which extended over a fortnight, attracted students from all over the Dominion, and from an educational point of view was a great success. Classes in economics and geology were conducted by Professor CondlifFe, Mr J. Johnson (Otago University), and Mr A. 11. Tocher (Victoria College)!, whilst Professor Shelley was the tutor for the drama and the psychology classes. Besides the class work, a series of educational lectures by leading educationalists and public men was a feature of the school. In the evenings free educational picture shows were given, and concerts, at which a number of English folk songs, rarely heard in the Dominion, were sung by the students. Altogether about 100 students attended the school, besides a great number of visitors. Several photos of the school appear on our illustrated pages.
