DOMINION TOURNAMENT. THE RINK CHAMPIONSHIP, WELLLNGiOX, January 18. The bowling tournament rmk championship competition was advanced anotner stage to-nay, when tne contest was narrowed down to the semi-finals. Die Governor-General attended m tne afternoon and was received by Mr i. Busn (pres.dent oX the Dominion Howling Association) and Mr fi. Meadowcroft (president 01 the Wellington Bowling Centre), and was given a most cordial reception. Tue early morning rain made the greens heavy. ihe teams remaining in the competitions were: Keid (Lyali Bay), Jury (Kararigahake), Graham (Remuera), Rennie (Christchurch), Marryatt (Lmwood), Smart (New Plymouth), M'Whannell (Hataitai), Ham (North End), London (Wanganui). Reid and Jury had not lost a match, so had two lives in reserve while the others had one. The most interesting of the early games was that in which M'Whannell beat Plain. In the final head M’Whannell’s last shot enabled him to lead by one. Hain was short, and the local team won by a point. Smart (New Plymouth) met Marryatt (i .ill wood ) and secured a somewhat easy victory of 11 points, with a head unplayed. Rennie (Christchurch) and Graham (Remuera) played an interesting game in the early stages, but Rennie’s team played like a book, and won by 6 points. Jury (Karangahako) and Reid (Lyall Bay) fought out a splendid game, the latter winning by one point. In the afternoon Jury met Smart again, and playing splendidly, secured the verdict by 2 points, Karangahake thus having an unbroken record of wins in the post section play. Rennie and Reid also played, the latter being defeated by 6 points. London (Wanganui) and M’Whannell (Hataitai) played a great game, the latter leading by 5 points with only two heads to go. The game was in doubt until London sent, his last shot, Hataitai being 5 down. The question as to whether Jury or' Rennie should have a bye was discussed to-night. As Jury was unbeaten it was agreed that he was entitled to the bye, but one of the rules under which the tournament is conducted is that the team having the greatest number of wins in section play is entitled to the bye. In section play Ronnie had won seven games, and Jury six games, so the former was given the bye. January 19. The Dominion Bowling Tournament Rink finals were played to-day in the presence of a large number of spectators. Jury (Karangahake) had two lives, which meant that he had to be beaten twice by Christchurch (Rennie) before being actually defeated. In the first match Christchurch won by 24 —16 with cue head to play This left both teams equal for the actual final. The game was even for the first few heads, then Karangahake secured a lead by five points, and on the conclusion of the ninth head weie seven up. Christchurch then gradually overhauled their opponents, and the game stood 11 each at the commencement of the fourteenth head. The Karangahake team played a more consistent game, and beat Christchurch on the short heads, while they held their own on the long ones. Compared with the previous game the Christchurch team was not up to form, a number of narrow shots being sent down. There was a good exhibition of drawing by members of each team at times. The most useful player was Gallagher, No. 3 for Karangahake, who mastered I he green, and proved a tower of strength. The lead also seldom failed. Scoring live on the sixteenth head gave Karangahake a lead of six, which was increased (o eleven on the eighteenth head. Christchurch were unable to make up the leeway afterwards on account of the heads being well mixed, and lost by eight points with the last head unplayed. At the conclusion of the game the losers entertained the winners, complimentary speeches being made. The tournament was declared to have been most enjoyable, and the officials were eulogised for its smooth running, especially the secretary, and the members of the Wellington Club for their hospitality. This is the second time a team skipped by Jury (Karangahake) has won a tournament within four years. The club only contains 20 members, and disbands in March through the mining ceasing.
