WORK OF THE SESSION

WHAT REMAINS TO BE DONE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, October 10.

Parliament has been doing very solid work this session, and there has been no undue delay in getting important business through. Indeed, the House has been working r faster than the Law Drafting Department, with the result that on Friday, night the Order Paper was almost cleared of important Government Bills. The most important measure remaining on the Order Paper was the Land and Income Tax Bill, but last week the Prime Minister .promised that he would not hurry this Bill through. The proba?bility is that it will not be considered in Committee i until Tuesday or "Wednesday. One reason why there is so little Government business on the Order Paper is that several matters are still before Parliamentary Committees. >

The butter question has to be reported to the House, and is likely to provoke a good deal of disoussioii. Possibly the .Government may decide to come to the assistance of the consumer, though not to the extent of the full difference in price as between the old and the new season's butter. The Minister of Finance can scarcely be expected to put a very big strain on the Consolidated Fund in this connection.

There seems, to be no reason, now why the session should not end in the first week in November, unless. something unexpected happens to provoke lengthy debates.
