THE WOOLLEN INDUSTRY
The Board of Trade report on the profits of woollen mills contains' a number of instructive tables, showing the earnings and expansion of the industry. The first gives the net profits with percentages- on gross capital for nine companies in 1919: — Net Per cent, on
I 3,000 .3,000 “ With reference to the above table>” the report states, “ it is advisable to point out that these figures cover reserves made for both special and general purposes, and. relate only to such amounts as are specially transferred to reserve accounts. In the case of almost every company the unappropriated balance of profits has been •‘increased in recent years as compared with 1914. These unappropriated profits are in themselves of / the nature of a general reserve. Since a considerable portion of the reserves has been set aside. for specific purposes and as the unappropriated profits have not been taken into account In the table, the figures do not provide any very significant statement of the position’ of the companies. To the extent that the companies have increased their general reserves instead of appropriating profits for purposes .of paying dividends, their action is probably due to a desire to make provision for a fall in prices and a period of unsuccessful tradhag.” The following table shows th e expansion of the companies’ operations from 1905-06
