RAILWAY PILFERING.
THREE ARRESTS MADE. An instance of the all too common practice of railway pilfering, which occurred at Palmcrston on the 12th, has been sheeted home without much clolay, and three men who were arrested on Thursday have all confessed to having a paa't m the affair. The 'charge is of stealing from the New Zealand Government, at Palmcrston, last Sunday, two cases of "Big Tree" benzine, valued at £3 4s. Detective Palmer and Constable Keise had charge of the case, and the first to be arrested was Ernest W. G. Arundel, a D'tmedin taxi driver, who was taken in charge early in tho afternoon. Later on the day Rodger Seymour Knight and Albert ■Norman Thompson, a fireman and a clerk employed by the Railway Department at Palmcrston, were arrested at Pahnerston and brought jn to town.
It appears that Arundel motored out from here on Saturday evening and spent Sunday at Palmerston with the other accused. They were doing a good deal of joy-riding, and replenished their stock of benzino from a wagon in the station yard. The cases were subsequently missed by the Railway Department, and the loss reported to the police. with 'the result that tho threo men named were arrested.
