September 10.—Fine, sunny days, with frosts, have been experienced during the last fortnight, and the kitchen and flower gardens are bei,.ng attended to. Socials.—The returned soldiers held a complimentary social in Wendonside Hall on August 27, and over a hundred guests were present. Splendid music was supplied byMr and Mrs Gilmour, and Messrs Clark, Sanson, and Mrs Dickson gave, solos. Accompaniments, Miss Cruickshanks and MiClark. Mr Shepard thanked the soldiers for the enjoyable evening. Presentation.—On August 31 a representative gathering of residents met at Mr Barren's residence. Mr Barron has sold his farm, and intends residing in Gore. Mr W. Bone! presented Mr Barron with a suit case and Mrs Barron with a travelling rug as a token of the esteem in which they are held. Mr Barron thanked his numerous friends for their presence on- the occasion and also for their gifts. Solos were rendered by Messrs Clark, Bond, and Mullen. The barn was tastefully decorated, and dancing was indulged in. Cleaving Side.—On Sept-ember 3 a clearing sale was held at Mr Barron's property, and- was one of the best and largest ever held in the district. Mr Barron had built ud an excellent stud flock, and-buyers from all the surrounding districts were present. The Castierock two-shear ram was the subject of keen competition, and. was finally knocked down to Mr M. R. Lawlor-at 60|gs, whilst another two-shear- ram of similar breeding went to the same buyer at 40gs. Other stud sheep were : 25- two, throe, and four-shear 41gs; 29 do., 4J-gs; 30 do., 4^gs; 24 one-shear ewes, 4-ggr.; 24 do., 4-ggs; 1 three-shear ram, 7gns: 4 ram hoggets, 9gns; 3 ram hoggets, 9 8 L gs; 7 do., 9gns; 1 do., Kgs; 9 do., 83gs; 36 do., 4|gs; 25 ewe hoggets, 3-igs; 26 do., 4gns; 2 two-shear rams, 3|gs. The store sheep sold: 43 MS. hoggets, 32s 9d; 84 two, four, and six-tooth wethers, 265; 63 ,two, four, six and eight-tooth ewes, 38s 7d; whilst an outside entry on account of Mr Alex. Spence brought 33s for 122 two, fo:ir, six, and eight-tooth ewes, and 32s 7d for 300 do. The purebred Fricsians were eagerly competed for, and were sold: Cow, Lady Gold, 67-igs; cow, May Queen, 43gs; cow. Gold Queen, 38gs; bull calf, J7£gs; whilst 15 young crossbred cattle brought £4 10s, and 5 do. £2. The dairy herd of 25 comprised a good selection, and sold at the great average of £2O each. . A six-year-old gelding, £43: nine-vear-old mare, in foal. £2B 10s; seven year-old mare, \£2o; three-year-old gelding, £25; and aged harness hack; £22 ss. In keeping with the rest of the sale, the implements, furniture, and sundries brought first-class prices. Personal.—Mr and Mrs M'Crostie, formerly of Glencairn Station, have left Waikaia'to reside in Inveicargill. Mr and Mrs Cockerill have left the d'strict to reside in Kaitangata. Mrs Cockerill is a splendid musician, and will be greatly missed. Health. —Severe colds are prevalent, and there has been one case of measles.
