LAKE COUNTY.
August 19.—Exceptionally hard frosts have been "experienced during the week. Electricity for Queenstown.— Owing to tlie Kawarau ' River damming back at the Kawarati Falls during a recent flood the Qnnutown Borough Conned has abandoned the idea of obtaining power at the falls to lh'ht Queenstown with electricity. In© council has now turned its attention to Wye Creek, and during the week .Mr E. Fox, representative of Messrs Kiley and > Co., engineers, Wellington, was engaged in a survey of "Wye Creek, with a view to its beino- utilised as .a source of power. It is understood that the creek .was found to be eminently suitable for the purpose, and Mr Fox's report will be submitted to the council in due course. , Personal.—Mr and Mrs George Held, 01 Glanorchy, are making the round trip _to the Pacific Islands in the Mokoia, -which. leaves Auckland on Tuesday next.—Mr J. Mackenzie (Mount Nicholas, Lake WatoOtipu), toft on Monday for Auciaand, where he joins the Niagara, on. route for Ilji. Mr Mackenzie is accompanied by his sister, Miss Mackenzie, of Walter Peak.-The death took place at Gore Hospital on the 29th ult. of Mr William Payne, a former resident oi the district. Deceased was a brother of Mr Bicbard Payne, Arrowtown. Accident.—Mrs E, R. Smythies, a visitor to the district, met with a serious accident at Ayrburn, Arrowtown, on Saturday last. She was riding, when her horse swerved, and she was thrown heavily against a tree, SUM sustained a fracture of the pelvis. She was attended by Dr Anderson, and is progressing favourably.
