WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held on Saturday, the chairman (Cr O'Connell) presiding over a full attendance. . g)

Mr .John Purvis, of Stoneburn, wrote suggesting that a water-trough should be placed on the Taieri Peak road. He also pointed! out that the Alexandra road was in a dangerous condition, plough and grader being needed.—The inspector reported that the road was being attended to.—The matter of the suggested trough was left over in the meantime.

Mr John Hughes, of Meadowbank, wrote suggesting repairs to the road leading past his property. The expense would not be great, as there was a Government grant of £ for £ up to £99 for the road. He also suggested a railing at a dangerous culvert below Mr Mill's place.—The inspector was authorised to get authority to spend the Government grant. Mr A, Hoggans, secretary of the Dunback Memorial Committee, wrote asking for a grant towards the erection of a memorial. —The matter was held over pending information from the School Committee, the council having previously decided to grant a subsidy of £ for £ to school committees up to £lO.

The council approved of a protest by the Nelson Town Council against local bodies being asked for subsidies towards technical education.

. Correspondence with regard to the proposal to form a South Otago Hospital District led to an expression of disapproval and a letter of protest. A circular letter was read from the "Waita~Hospital and 'Charitable Aid Board with regard to infectious diseases and the inspection of buildings, maintaining that the dunes should be carried out by the branches of the Department of Public Heaith and not by the local bodies. —The letter was approved. The Hon. B. P. Lee wrote in reply to the council's letter regarding the duty on children's footwear, and stating that the question of placing boys and-girls' footwear on the free list would! receive attention when, the tariff was under review.

The sum of £9 16s, thirds and fourths, was allocated to the Taieri Peak road, and the sum of £1 8s 8d to Cosy Dell road, Dunback. The inspector was authorised to get some metal put on the road leading to Mrs Sutherland's property, Goodwood. The inspector's report dealing with the work done in the various ridings was considered, aucl it was decided to call for tenders for 200 yards' gravelling on the main road to Hyde. The Chairman and Cr Miller were appointed to sign the rate book. Accounts totalling £416 9s 9d were passed for payment.
