TABLE TALE.

Friday Evening. Last Friday Mrs O'Neill gave a delightful afternoon tea at her residence, High street, to ©ay farewell to Mrs Bruce. The drawing room was beautifully arranged with bowls of wattle and other spring flowers. Tea was served in the dining room, where again there wa3 a profusion of spring flowers, yellow narcissi being used as a table decoration and snowdrops on the niantelpiecce. After tea Mrs M'Kibbin sang delightfully, accompanied by Mrs Champtaloup. Some pretty gramophone music also added to the enjoyment of the afternoon. Mrs O'Neill received her guests in the drawing room, and was attired in pale grey crepe de chine relieved by a single ceriss- pink rose. Mrs Bruce wore a. tweed coat and skirt,, brown hat, and furs. Also present were Lady Fenwick, Mesdames Fergus, Macdontild, Drennan, Champtaloup, K. Boss, E. Hazlett, 8: Neill, Laadlaw, Gallaway, Falla, Gowland, Mackellar, Du Croz, Dunlop, Hilton, Carmalt Jones, Tr<Jtt, Misses Stock, Sise>, Ulrich, Gallaway, Laidlaw.

A few small bridge evening! have been given during the week. The hostesses were Mesdames J. A. Cook, Hilton,, Sise, Fenwick, Batchelor etc. '

The "Mother Hubbard" Pantomime Company is playing at His Majesty's Theatre this week, and drawing good houses.

Spring flowers are making their appearance in some gardens, but the. cold; unsettled weather of the past week has been a set-back to early blooms.

The Hon. H. V. and Mrs Borst, visitors from New York, paid Dunedin a short visit last week, and seemed very favourably impressed with the beauties of our town.

Sir John and Lady Roberts have gone for a visit to Wellington and Napier.

Mrs Alex. Roberts has returned to Wellington.

The Rev. P. and Mrs- Wilkinson* left on Tuesday for Canton, where *hey will carry on mission, work. Both having ■studeid at the Otago University, a large number of fellow students wers- present to see them depart.

A splendid supper was served by the Ladies' Committee.

A children's "Ingleside" was held in the Caledonian Society's Hall last night. There was a very large attendance of adults as well as children. The entire programme was given by the children. It consisted of songs, dances, recitations, and a dialogue. A singing competition was held, and was won by Mis Shekla Bush, whoso item was "Oh, whistle an' I'll come tae ye, my lad." It is pleasing to note that the young members of the society are learning to sing the songs of Scotland; so few of the present generation attempt them nowadays. It is to foster the love of Scottish music and dances that the society has been formed,, and we hope in the future to see even more competitors than came forward last evening. -' The engagement has been announced of Miss Billie Bourke, daughter of our chief postmaster, to Mr James Hessell, a returned soldier.

We have been enjoying three weeks of perfect weather—shght frosts in the morning with day 3 of brilliant sunshine following. To-day ha« been like an early day. The golfers have been making the most of the glorious weather, getting off the various matches. Some of the enthusiasts are busy practising for the different championship meetings, which come off later.

The school sports were hold to-day, their being 500 competitors (boys and girls). There wa-s a large attendance of the public.

WELLINGTON, August 18. Two women who have been doing interesting work are here at present. These are Mrs M'Hugh and Miss Ballantine, who were acting as street patrols on behalf of the soldiers in London, and are now engaged by the New Zealand Government to lecture throughout the country on the question of social hygiene. They gave addresses in Wellington this week under the auspices of the Women's National Council. Miss Henderson, general secretary of the W.C.T.U., came up from Christchurch to at lend the meeting. Much interest was displayed, ,and the meeting passed a resolution with regard to the new Hygiene Bill that it would oppose any form ot compulsory notification. Mrs Clifford Godden passed through Wellington yesterday, en route to the Pacific Islands for a trip. Lady Stout was re-elected president of the Pioneer Club at its general meeting this week. The vice-presidents elected were Miss A. Kane, Mrs J. Myers, Dr Agnes Bennett, Mrs J. C. Andersen, and Mrs Pomare.

A jolly little annual dance is that of Banks' College staff and boys, which took place this year on Tuesday in the Marine Engineers' Ball. The boys made excellent hosts, and all their young friends had .a very good time. Mrs Ei'l Williams, who has been visiting her mother in Masterton, has returned to Lowry Bay. Mrs Hayward, who has also been visiting Mrs Vallanc© in Masterton, has returned to the Lower Hutt.

Death has been busy in our midst during the past week, and it is with deep regret I have to record the passing away cf Mrs Aubin, wife of Dx Aubin, Parnell.

Mxich sympathy has also bean expressed for Mr and Mrsi Athol Mills at the death of their only child, ia. little girl of four years of age, after an illnes of several months. The death has also occurred of Miss M. A. Bacon, who was so well and affectionately known throughout Auckland.
