MIGRATION.
(By Cable.) LONDON, August 18
The Overseas Settlement Committee received 47,000 applications from ex-service men and women for free passages to the dominions, numbering 250,000 souls, including dependents. The committee has issued up to the end of July passage warrants to 13,000 applicants, representing 65,000 souls, including dependents. Fifty per cent, of the total are proceeding to Canada, 25 per cent, to Australia, 15 percent, to New Zealand, 5 per cent, to South Africa., and the balance to East ASrica, Rhodesia, and other parts of the Empire. Applications will not be accepted after December. NEW YORK, August 19. The Department of Labour has- announced that more than 5000 immigrants are arriving in New York daily, and approximately 700,000 arrived in tho United States for the year ended June 30. Eoreig.i steamship companies have reported to the immigration officials that all the available accommodation for a year in advance has been booked by prospective immigrants.
DELHI., August 17. The efforts to clieok the flood of Indian Moslems into Afghanistan are beyond control. After the Amir Issued instructions against the influx barbed ■wire barriers were erected on the frontier, but pilgrims, numbering 10,000 rushed them, and threatened to fight an Afghan regiment which was posted to prevent their ingress. Eventually the Khalifat representative was allowed to pass, and he secured permission for the remainder of the pilgrims to pass, but further batches will be forcibly resisted. Peshawar is in a state of excitement. Pilgrims throng the bazaars, causing chaos and confusion.
