RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP.

At last week's meeting of" the Otago University Council Mr John Edmond wrote forwarding his cheque for £2GOO for the establishment of a research scholarship in chemistry in memory of his late father. "In an accompanying letter the donor explained that with the Government subsidy of £2OOO it was hoped that this would provide a sum sufficient for a scholarship of £2OO annually with something like £2O over that might be expended on materials to be used in research work. It was intended that the research should be in connection with New Zealand industries.

Mr J. C. Stephens moved the following resolutions, which were unanimously adopted:—" (1) That the council accord Mr John Edmond its sincere thanks for his generous gift; (2) that the Finance Committee be instructed to obtain an investment for the amount of the gift and the subsidy, to decide whether the first scholarshin shall be awarded in 1921 or 1922, and to take such steps as are necessary to invite applications for the scholarship; (3) that the professor of chemistry be instructed to report annually to the council in respect of the work of the scholar and that a copy of such report be forwarded to Mr Eclmond; (4) that the conditions of the scholarship as submitted by Mr Edmond be referred to tho professors of science to report."
