INCREASED RAILWAY RATES
THE NEW TARIFF, The parliamentary correspondent of the Star telegraphs: The revised railway charges involve an increase on the ordinary passenger rates by one-fourth over the 1914 rates, involving a 7 per cent, rise on recent rates. There is an all-round increase of 2s on excursion fares. The suburban rates are completely recast. Threepence is added to weekly workers', tickets. The biggest changes are in the goods revision, providing that, except in cases of bread, flour, fresh milk, fruit, meat, tea., and sugar (which are increased by one-tenth), and wheat (which is increased by one-fifth), all goods, live stock rates, haulage, storage, and demurrage have been increased by two-fifths, while further increases are imposed by altering the classification of frozen meat from D to C, and flax from E to D. The rates for parcels, horse 9, and carriages have been increased: by one-third, and timber has been increased by one-seventh.
